Extremism, a Danger to Climate Justice

Extremism- a Danger to

Climate Justice

Extremism a Danger to Climate Justice!

The IYNF cycle “Extremism – A Danger to Climate Justice” explored the growing links between environmental crises, social inequality and the rise of extremist and exclusionary ideologies. The cycle was developed in response to the increasing instrumentalisation of climate anxiety, economic insecurity and ecological transition by far-right and authoritarian movements, which often undermined democratic values, solidarity and inclusive climate action.

Through trainings, exchanges and educational resources, the cycle supported young people and youth workers in critically analysing how extremism exploited environmental and social tensions, and how this posed a direct threat to climate justice. It strengthened participants’ ability to recognise extremist narratives, disinformation and greenwashing, while fostering democratic resilience, critical thinking and active citizenship.

Grounded in non-formal education and the values of International Young Naturefriends, the cycle connected climate justice with anti-racism, human rights and social justice perspectives. It empowered young people to engage with climate action in a way that was inclusive, solidarity-based and resistant to authoritarian and exclusionary approaches, contributing to a more just, democratic and sustainable future.
