Happening under the motto “Together for a green and social future” the event brought together over 120 young Naturefriends from all Germany to the nature of Jugendzeltplatz Sauloch in Rödental, North Bavaria, between 3rd and 6th of October.

The content was wisely designed to suit the interests and needs of a large group of participants, bringing moments of serious discussion and learning, through workshops and debates; but also moments of fun with games and outdoor activities like climbing, archery and football – gathering the diversity and expertise that makes every local Naturefriends group different and unique. And providing this way, not only the opportunity to discuss more about favorite topics but also a chance to get acquainted with new fields. The workshops created a solid program, with the possibility to choose from a wide range of themes: politics; urban gardening; inclusion; anti-fascism; environmental education; youth work; design or veganism, just to name a few.

Unlike on IYNF events, where members from the German Young Naturefriends are usually present, having someone from the international organization attending a national event was quite unique. As IYNF representative I saw this opportunity as a good occasion to show the international face of Naturefriends, and at the same become aware of the work that is being on the regional level.

This was also the first time I have attended an event alone in my EVS journey, and knowing that it would all be held in German language was making me feel apprehensive during my 6 hour travel from Prague. I was fearing I will not be able to enjoy the meeting fully like any other participant. But fortunately I was wrong. Since the very first moment I felt very well received and I recognized the generosity, equality and the spirit of union that is strongly present among the Naturefriends regardless the country. The feeling got even better after I was introduced to the whole group; immediately they started to approach me with questions, wanting to know more about IYNF, my EVS project and eager to practice their English. The conversation also clarified my perspective about the German Young Naturefriends, as a very proactive group, that takes the Naturefriends ideals very seriously.

In a workshop based event, it would also make sense to give my own contribution, so I brought with me a presentation based on the Green Toolbox book. In return I was offered with a very idyllic environment. So in a nice wooden shed, surrounded by trees and gently wrapped in mist. I exchanged with a group of young but very conscious individuals, some sustainability ideas while we shared personal experiences in order to contribute for a more eco-friendly society.

The evening had another very important and challenging moment waiting for me – an insight about International Young Naturefriends in front of the audience, explaining the aims, structure, activities, the upcoming and the past events.

“Together for a green and social future” ended with the classic farewell party. A positive mood was dominant among participants and organizers, who recognizing the success were pledging to make national meetings more often in the future.
