“Happy 50th Year Anniversary!” is a greeting that we would normally associate with something getting old and lost in time, but this doesn’t apply to IYNF. This week of celebration showed how fresh this organization still is, thanks to the youthfulness of its members who are its heart and soul.
Although it’s been less than one month, I can proudly say that I have already started contributing to this synergy which keeps everything growing strong. This activity basically marked the beginning of my long-term ESC volunteering in the most exciting way.
Our first stop was Vienna, where we got to know the Presidium for the first time. I was a bit anxious, but they were each very welcoming and we had inspiring conversations both in the office and at some amazing vegan restaurants.
Then we headed to Wildalpen, set our tents and rested a bit while enjoying the breathtaking view that would be our home for the next week.

Although the sun abandoned us, we were energized to set-up before the participants came. After some team building to break the ice, the sun rose again for the chaos game. This led us to explore every corner of the venue while doing fun tasks, making us feel like kids again.
In the afternoon we offered a wide variety of workshops, one of which was happily organised and led by me. We dove into the stop motion world, giving the chance to participants to develop their creativity and bring their stories to life through a short animation video. At night, the clouds kindly moved away, giving us the possibility to end the day with a lovely stargazing activity.
We headed into the weekend ready for the most adventurous workshops which everyone was looking forward to: kayak and hiking.

For some of us, just like me, this was the first-time trying kayak; it was certainly an experience I will never forget. It was not an easy beginning, since I struggled during the flip-over test. I did not expect the stream and the cold water to be so impactful and had to take a break. Shortly after, however, I hopped again on the kayak ready to play some games, proudly aware that I was overcoming my fears and living to the fullest.
Hiking was less challenging but still exciting. We climbed the mountain through a narrow path that gave fairy vibes and led us to a panoramic spot facing the lake.

Alongside these thrilling activities, we also had the chance to reflect and relax. During Nazarena’s workshop on advocacy, we debated on fast fashion, a topic I feel really close to. This time, I had to stand on the side I usually go against. Trying to talk like a greedy multi–millionaire CEO was a fun exercise, but in the back of my mind I was rooting for my mates accusing me of nasty stuff (they were right).
After all that, what could be more relaxing that going to the local traditional sauna? Thanks to our Finnish participant, we also learnt many insights, which was super interesting to me as I had never experienced doing a sauna.
For the last night we all gathered around a campfire, shared snacks from our countries and thanked each other for this amazing experience. Some of the participants told us they would have enjoyed staying longer, and I hope this can be a reason for them to come to our upcoming training and make more unforgettable memories.
