Below is the resolution that was approved by the General Assembly on the 12th April 2025.

Based on Doomsday Clock 2025 estimation, we are 89 seconds before midnight. The Bulletin of the Atomic scientists was influenced from the increased nuclear threat to make the decision to move the clock one second closer to midnight in comparison with last year. 80 years after the first atomic bombing in Hiroshima, the nuclear threat has been unpreceded.

Recently, the French President talked about the consideration of extending the protection of France’s nuclear arsenal to its allies. Based on ICAN data, currently 9 countries possess nuclear weapons. In 2023 there were 12.512 nuclear warheads in the world, with some European Countries (like Germany and the Netherlands) hosting nuclear warheads and others possessing (like France and the UK). The numbers are expected to get higher the following years.

ICAN, the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons, aims to mobilize the Civil Society to support the nuclear disarmament. Its headquarters are located in Geneva and has local and international partner organisations. The 2017 Nobel Peace Prize was awarded to ICAN.

Points of action:

  • IYNF becomes an international partner organisation of ICAN
  • IYNF advocates against the production and usage of nuclear weapons and creates dialogue opportunities with other international organisations
  • Creating an action plan regarding the topic and informing IYNF MOs in the next networking meetings about the current state of affairs
